Benefits of regular car and van services include:
  • Reducing the cost of repairs over the life of the vehicle

  • Reduced chance of accidents due to faulty brakes or bald tyres
  • The possibility of greater fuel economy

Vehicle servicing acts as a preventative measure against many future problems as we pick up on subtle changes and fix them before they become issues. Even a simple oil change has a big impact on the life of an engine as contaminated oil creates more wear.

Does it matter where you get your car serviced?

Yes it does, not all garages are the same and taking your car or van to be serviced at an unreputable garage can cost more and leave you with damage that needs fixing. When you’re looking for a garage to service your car or van, look for:
  • Average ratings on Google of 4.5 or higher
  • Partnerships with recognisable and trustworthy suppliers such as Castrol and Falken Tyres
  • Connections with trustworthy associations like Trust My Garage and Trading Standards
  • Transparent pricing, paperwork, and invoicing
  • Good customer service and easy to contact
  • Guarantee or warranty on parts

Is it worth paying for a full service?

A full service at least once a year is absolutely worth it, especially before your MOT. Services give your vehicle a full health check and flags up minor and major causes for concern that could otherwise fail the MOT. Keeping a vehicle roadworthy is the responsibility of the driver, for their safety and the safety of other road users. Regular services are a simple and effective way of maintaining that roadworthiness.

After how many miles should I service my petrol car?

Petrol cars typically require servicing every 10,000 to 12,000 miles or once a year, whichever comes first. Many drivers get their vehicle serviced every six months, especially if they drive a lot, once before their MOT and once as a six-month interim check-up.

How often should you service a diesel car?

Diesel engines endure compression and soot build-up at a higher rate than petrol engines, so they need servicing more frequently. Aim for every 8,000 to 10,000 miles or once a year, whichever is sooner.

What factors affect how often a car should be serviced?

Weirdly, cars that complete more urban, stop-start, short trips frequently tend to need servicing more often than cars that have longer regular journeys with less traffic. As well as this, there are a few other factors:
  • If you tow other vehicles, even once, as this puts a strain on the engine.
  • Manufacturers recommendations differ as some cars come with long-life oils that extend service intervals and others have specific service intervals.
  • Petrol and diesel engines require services at different intervals, with diesel engines at 8,000 and petrol at 10,000 miles.

What to expect when getting a car serviced?

Getting a car or van serviced is a straightforward process that can take between 2 and 4 hours, depending on the size, type, and state of the vehicle.
Book your car in for a service in advance and let the booking team know if you think there are any problems they need to investigate.
Drop your vehicle at the garage, hand over the keys and they will take it from there.
If work needs to be carried out, the garage will ring you and ask your permission before doing the work. At Motorvation we will always call and give you the price of the additional work so you can make an informed decision to go ahead or not.
An example of this is tyre wear. Let’s say you bring your van for a service a couple months before your MOT and your tyres are near the end of their roadworthiness, we will recommend getting a new set of tyres then, rather than failing your MOT. It’s up to our customers if they want to go ahead with the new tyres, we never pressure sales onto people.
We’ll let you know when your car or van is ready to be collected and let you know how any additional work went and if any further action needs to be taken.
